Postby Asa87 » Tue Feb 05, 2008 11:31 am

Well i no this isnt really about martial arts, but was just curious if anyone here cycles at all? I just bought a new road bike today and im going to be using it to commute into work and back... which will be 15 miles in the morning and 15 back in the evening, gonna help alot to whip me into shape.

So anyone else do any biking? Road, Mountain, racing, events... whatever.

Also another thing this year i am going to be training up to compete in a triathalon, Anyone ever competed in triathalon before?

Never done a triathalone but I bike to and from work in the summermonths. It is a tad hard to do that in the winter....Winterpeg sees about three feet of snow during the "busy" snow months and we hit a chilly Minus 40 some days.

I have rode the fixed bike for cutting weight if that counts, it is honestly my favorite way to sweat because it is easy but gets you sweating more than running ect.

I ride 11.5 KM to work and back and on fridays that the wife is at her moms with my daughter I walk or jog it home.

Winnipeg is a funny place, in the winter we hit minus 30-40 for most of the winter and it is a Darn bitter wind. I have read that with the wind chill it has hit -50 a few times this year. Being flatlanders the wind tends to blow with no hills or valleys to alter or slow its path...makes it darn cold!
Now in the summer we hit 30-35 above and with the Humidex (fancy way of saying humidity) it can feel like 50 above...Darn hot and the air is clean and clear most of the time in the summer with the cloads rushing threw and not sticking about...makes it darn hot! And then the Bugs! ARRRR...Outside training can be hard.

I dont mind the indoor bikes but if I train inside I prefer the treadmill!

You are kidding? Okay here are some major differences between Ontario and Manitoba!

1. Sports: Ontario teams have big time major leage teams that draw 20,000-30,000 (Argos) fans a game and the teams loose millions each year and dont make it to the play offs. Our teams draw 50,000 fans and makes the play offs....yet toronto is what...five times bigger than Winnipeg? The Maple leafs drew 13,000 and are members of the NHL, our team is a member of the MUCH smaller AHL and our moose draw 28,100 for our play off games.....Strange eh, and think about it...we could not "afford" a NHL team!???

2. House prices:Toronto $376,236, same house in Winterpeg $207,026!

3. Beer at the bar: $2.50 - $3.50 Okay that is the same in Winnipeg as in Toronto...but in Ontario $3,034,218 for 12,850,636 people was sold, in Manitoba $226,668 for 1,190,400 people was sold....breaking that down.
In ontario each person roughly buys 4 beer a yr. in Manitoba we buy 6 per person....not a perfect example but what the hell!

4. Governement: In Ontario everyone knows who the premier is, you are the seat of our governement, Ottawa is the home of the largest concentration of politicians and political minded people in Canada! In Manitoba, we like that all the politicians are in Ottawa

5. Hostory: Ontario was formed formed when the British landed and created Upper and lower Canada, battled the French and created a new land. Manitoba was created by a bunch of Rebels made up of Canadian Aboriginals, Metis and Farmers....Much more fun!

6. City size: People from Toronto say Winnipeg is a nice "town" in Winnipeg we think Toronto is a great American city!

7. Winter: In Toronto if the temp hits minus 30 and they have a foot of snow they call it a Disaster and call in the army, we call it thursday!

8. attractions: Both Toronto and Ottawa have major attractions that bring in hundreds of thousands of visitors a year. Buildings that cost millions to make and maintain. The local governements put huge budgets together and run them as attractions with staff specifically trying to draw in tourists. We open a shopping mall at the site two rivers meet off down town and get pretty much the same amount of people coming to see two rivers meet...who is smarter now?

9. Summer: Ontario has good summers that last longer than Winnipegs, but Winnipeg has more sun light hours than anywere in Canada...fact! Our summers might be shorter, but we have found a way to enjoy them more...longer days!

10. People: In Manitoba our motto is "friendly" Manitoba and we live up to it. In Ottawa it is "If you dont have an MBA you must be a NDP or LIB" and in Toronto it is "I could have been a New Yorker!"

Dont get me wrong, I love Ontario and Think the world of Ottawa, they are great places to visit, but home is home!
