Ive been hearing that doing bodyweight exercises give you more functional strength and power than just lifting weights alone but im not sure. Can anyone clear this up for me?

my understranding of what they mean by functional strength is if you are running or doing something that jsut involves you your only supporting your body weight, so by that functional strength means being able to do the most with your bodyweight, not preparing your body for higher weights and stuff that you wouldnt encounter normally so it just helps you to get better endurance in your muscles but you should really do both that and heavy weighted exercises

Depends what your ultimate goal is, and I noticed you said heavy weights, I don't do em, some light weights every now and then. I know some guys who are into body building, they can't even do 50 straight push-ups.

I meant as far as mma and fighting. It seems like they do a whole bunch of bw exercises like chinups, pullups, etc and do weights secondarily.I know that alot of guys look big but that doesnt necessarily mean they can fight.Im trying to get bigger, ripped, and have the power to knock somebody out and also be able to do other stuff like sprint, etc.Basically get bigger and still be athletic, since most bodybuilders are not.

I think alot of people think body weight work is better for the following reasons:

1. It is easy to do, you don't need equipment
2. it is easy to make a circuit, again because no equipment
3. generally you use more muscles with body weight work, ie. pushups require you to balance alot more than bench press
4. you can vary the intensity alot with body weight work (slow movement or polymetric movement)

all that being true I think there is definately a play for weight training as well

i think that they should just both be used but i think its also good to sometimes lift heavy, like if you develop great strength from heavy lifting, and you supplement that with bw exercises and light weights high reps and stuff, i think that it would make you stronger and more effective then just bw exercises, i didnt mean at all to just lift heavy though, considering somebody builders are too bulky to run right

you can make your own goto to a farm and ask for a wornout tractor tire thn buy a cheap sledgle hammer like 15 bucks at walmart then fill some milk jugs with sand maybr tie a rope around a old car tire and fill that up with cement and you have your own very cheap gym
