How long you been taking Taekwondo? Breathing should be one of the first thing you are taught. Breathing correctly will help you take a punch and keep you from getting tired as quickly. It wont give you more energy just help yours last longer.

Learning to control your breathing which should be a fundamental thing they should teach you in TKD can be applied to anything you do in life. What proper breathing will do will allow you to control your heart rate and allow you to get the proper amount of oxygen into you so that you do not tank early

You should have already started to learn the fundamentals now already. What breathing is good for as stated by diceandslice is that it will help you going by controlling your heart rate and thus helping you not to tank out as quickly.
