Here is my top ten list for the current fighters, I only included the five major weight classes.....
HW:
1. Fedor
2. Big Nog
3. Brock
4. Frank Mir
5. Shane Carwin
6. Cain Velasquez
7. Randy Couture
8. Andrei Arlovski
9. Junior Dos Santos
10. Bret Rogers
While FEDOR still should prove himself in the UFC, his destruction of AA and his pending fight with Rogers makes him top dog. Randy is still in my top ten simply because of his MMA IQ, I dont see him doing much more than giving the newbies a hard time in the ring.
LHW:
1. Machida
2. Shogun Rua
3. Anderson Silva
4. Rampage Jackson
5. Rashad Evans
6. Forrest Griffin
7. Mousasi
8. Thaigo silva
9. Lous Arthor Cane
10. Little Nog
Andersons besting of Forrest and a few other LHW fighters has put him on the map here as well as his middle weight belt, Even if you dont agree with Shoguns loss to Machida...Machida is still the top dog and has looked better all around than most. Rampage ahead of Forrest and Evans, yah a mental laps and possible retirement might pull him off in my Spring listing but he would best both again in a rematch if he was 100% mentally and physically.
MW:
1. Anderson Silva
2. Dan Henderson
3. Nate Marquardt
4. Vitor Belfort
5. Robbie Lawler
6. Patrick Cote
7. Misaki
8. Maia
9. Akiyama
10. George Santiago
With Hendos contrct pending and Silva itching to dance we will more than likely see him take on Marquardt for a second round and see belfort grab a good warm up fight. I put Cote on here because he will be back soon and he is one of the few to really give Silva a run for his money. Even if Silva was acting the ass I think it was to compensate for his troubles with the Canadian boxer.
WW:
1. GSP
2. Thiago Alves
3. Jon Fitch
4. Jake Sheilds
5. Diago Sanchez
6. KOS
7. Carlos Condit
8. Kampmann
9. Raulo Thiago
10. Matt Hughes
Now that GSP has taken up wrestling and can do more than a KOS blanket approach to fighting I dont see any of the top ten making a run for his belt in a serious way. But GSP has been known to let down his guard to much and get caught...see Matt Serra! Even if GSP has tossed Alves, Fitch, Hughes and KOS all around they still can vie for second in line bragging rights. Hughes may be older and wiser but he is holding that top ten spot by the skin of his teeth in my eyes. He still can rumble but at a B/C level opponent level , Can wait to see his next fight.
LW:
1. BJ
2. Aoki
3. Alvarez
4. Florian
5. Edgar
6. Sherk
7. Gray Maynard
8. JZ Calvancante
9. Roger Huerta
10. Hell Boy Hanson
No secret I am not a fan of the Light weights. Most are just crazy fast and lack pure skills like striking and finishing a fight. I always tell my wife to settle in when they fight, all three rounds will more than likly be used. Even in bloody fights the Judges are called upon more times than not. That being said BJ seems to be unstoppable at this weight class, and very beatable at WW so hopefully he sticks to the Jenny Craig division. Outside of BJ all of these guys are very beatable depending on the day of the week. Florian looked great working his way up to the title shot...both times, and he just can not pull the trigger when it comes time. Sherk cant win a fight in a dominant way unless he has roids pumping through him and Edgar, Maynard and Huerta are all up and coming still. The division has the most room for growth as far as not being a lock for any one of the fighters under Penn and any new fighters that come in could beat a top ten guy and boot them off the list. Now that the LW division is back we just need to see it Gel in the UFC and other groups really push the little guys to finish a fight and not just prove they are cardio machines.
