If your a novice in the fight game my advice wold be to experiment, don't comit yourself to 1 style and before getting into kickboxing or BJJ find which style bests suits you. For enjoyment purposes and which works best for your body.
I know MMA is MIXED martial arts but you will more than likely end up favoring a particular style more, it's all about what you as an individual prefer. EXPERIMENT!!

Fightdr is right. Go to some schools in your area take a look at what is around you. Most schools will even let you take a class for free. Check them out see which style or school interests you or which one you think you fit in with better and start there.

DaS is right. I would call around and ask if you can either participate or watch a class. More than likely you can find find a few places that will let you participate. Heck, you may even find a few that will let you participate once a month for free!

visit both, see which one you lik the most. By that I mean, check the facilities and talk to the instructors and some guys that train. The place that seems the best is the one you should pick.

If you are planning to get into MMA and just want some experience I suggest Thai boxing or BJJ, Personally I think BJJ gives one of the best preporations for MMA but If you like to keep the fight standing Thai is probably the shit. I know that the guys in my MMA group that used to train BJJ kicks the ass out of me as soon as they get me to the ground and it is not an easy thing to keep the fight standing when you are agaisnt a BJJ fighter.
