Quote:
The Ultimate Fighting Championship has suspended fighter Chris Leben for nine months and fined him one-third of his fight purse following a positive drug test for the steroid Stanazolol after his loss to Michael Bisping at UFC 89 in England in October. The news was reported by Dave Meltzer of Yahoo! Sports.

The UFC has long stood by drug testing of the athletes competing for the promotion, even overseas in England where they have no formal athletic commission to handle the process.

At these events, the UFC leans on former head of the Nevada State Athletic Commission and now UFC vice president, Marc Ratner, to handle the duties normally handled by an overseeing committee like the athletic commissions in the United States.

Leben has never tested positive before, but this is still a major setback in his career.

“I am obviously disappointed with Chris, who has made great strides getting his life back on track,” UFC president Dana White told Meltzer. “To his credit, he has taken responsibility for his actions and is accepting the punishment that has been handed down. But as always, the UFC puts the safety of its athletes first and foremost, and we won’t tolerate anyone using performance enhancing drugs in our organization.”

According to the report, the UFC tested all 22 athletes on the card before and after the fights, and Leben to date is the only fighter who has tested positive for illegal substances.

How do you guys feel about steriods? I don't use 'em but is it all that bad? Before i've always though about it as cheating, dishonest, etc...but now I have mix feelings about it. I don't think it's all that bad!

it's cheating. If you can't do it by yourself, don't do it at all. Leban is just a dumbass (too many punches to the head)

Two issues with using in my books.

First off, like our fearless leader said...it is cheating. The rules say dont use em. they are trying to create an even playing feild and then some Jabroni comes along and pumps shit in his arm that makes his dick shrink and arms bigger...zits and roid rage along with hair in "funny" places ext and so on...Oh, and he gets a performance edge. Well it is not fair. I know alot of guys use them to train harder and also to prevent injury or heal up faster, it is an unfair edge and banned...nuff said.

Secondly is the health issues. Yah, so you get a few years of being bigger and stronger...then many years of liver issues, Kidneys shut down, cancers, and dear god...Tiny tiny testies! Now, when you are living the life and fighting you dont care...but when you are ten years out of fighting and still paying for your year and a half extra by sitting in dialasis or chemo...yah, then you start to think that the year was not worth the hours and hours a year you sit with your blood filtering, or wondering if you will get to see your kid graduate. A buddy of mine from high school (yes we had high school when I was a kid) just died of heart disease that was brought on by use of steroids, he died bald, rather smaller and had battled kidney disease, Cancer, hip replacement and knee replacement and also chronic high blood pressure. Yes, he looked good for the two body building competitions he went to, and won Jr. Mr. Manitoba one year...but he did NOT leave a good corpse!

Before anyone thinks that shoving a needle in their arm or popping a pill is such a good idea, look 5, 10 or 15 years down the road and tell me what you want to be....me...Alive!

I absolutly hate any drug taking...and when a professional athlete uses them it really pisses me off. They know what they are doing when they sign on to be a pro and the responsibilities that comes with the money fame and love of doing something you love like being a pro athlete. It is cheating plain and simple and it is TOTALLY unexceptable and the drug takes should be dealt with harshly.
The medical reasons have all been stated clearly so I won't go on but to say that Kensei is spot on. We are still a new main stream sport and this bull shot from a main event fighter will make headlines and could set us back lots in the public eyes.

Leben has always been a wild guy and done what he wants when he wants and how he wants but this takes the piss. I hope he can come back and show what he is truely made off but I will find it difficult routing for him the same way.

One question as we are on the subject of drug cheats, does anyone actually believe Sherk actually willing took a banned substance? I normally don't really buy into the innocent excuse cos we are all responsible for our own actions but with Sherk I actually do believe him. The guy has always been such a pro and works harder than anybody and I just find it hard to believe that someone with that mentality would cheat...maybe it's just me.

What if steriods (I guess anabolic steriods) is made legal, is still cheating?

Depends on the AC and the organization then.

Still, why take the risk?

Asking "if they were Legal" is still kind of silly, I mean would I be okay with it...No, Again for the medical reasons. Fine you want to be a top level fighter, but to give up your life for your dream like that, to throw you health away....stupid. and NO, I would still be unfair.

Making steroids legal would to be very stupid and unfair. It will put lots more pressure on people to take steroids and jeopardise their health when they may not want to. Lots of people would look at steroids thinking they need to rather than them taking them cos they want to. I hope that never happens and if it did then my first response is still why do it to yourself, it's not worth your life.
My opinion is simple do it on your own and fairly or don't do it at all, end of story!!!

I think Tiger Woods getting Lasik surgery so he can get 20/15 vision is unfair to the sport of golf. Isn't that "performance enhancing?"

It is hard to say, Stats are kind of weak because most of the "Steroid" deaths look like other things, like cancer or suicide were the guy was on roids. We tend to have issues with latching them down.

Something like getting enhanced vision is in a totally different field that injecting hormones or synthetic enhancements into the body. Would the ability of a fighter be increased significantly if he can see better than 20/20? Potentially. But, would it be a greater increase to the fighter and his chances of winning if he was able to heal faster, build muscle faster, expell lactic acid more efficently than his opponent and hit 20-40 percent harder?

Again in reference to Tiger Woods, would his ability to see more clearly significantly increase his ability to hit the ball more accurately and farther? I think that the line between Tiger and the ball and an MMA fighter and hormonal supplements is drastic.
