So I was reading a little story on yahoo about TUF season 7 contestant Matthew Riddle and I found out he was a purple belt in BJJ. As I was reading his Bio he explained how him and one friend would train in their apartment and he had no real experience at a true BJJ/MMA gym. The only experience was high school and some college wrestling experience. How the hell is he a purple belt...doesnt it take like 5 or so years to get...Thats crazy because it seemed like he didnt seriously train BJJ until like a year before he was on TUF...Does anyone know any info on this kid?

it usually takes anywhere between 2 years and eternety to get a purple belt. Kinda depends on you and your coach

Yea, The one thing about BJJ is that different instructors/coaches have different expectations....So there could be a person who is a blue belt but is absolutely phenomenal and competes well with brown and purple belts but at the same time there could be a guy who has a purple belt and he could be pretty good but still not up to par of what a purple belt should be....So I kinda believe that if your at least a blue belt in BJJ then really nothing matters except your attitude and work ethic...

no, once you can hang with purple belts you get your purple belt. That's the way it works. Only way that can happen is if you don't meet your instructor very often. That stuff happened a few times 10-15 years ago. But absolutly not now.

I guess when you say hang with a purple belt what exactly do you mean....like being able to just survive and being able to escape some of their submissions or do you mean being able to control them and pull off submissions...

that means get points on a regular basis, not get totally humiliated and subbed in a minute.
Right now I'm a blue belt with 2 stripes

Stripes are progressions between belt ranks i.e. a blue belt progressing towards their purple will gain stripes up until their grading test which is very rigorous dependent on which gym and branch you train under, once you successfully demonstrate you have the skill to be able to control belts above your current rank you should then be granted your next belt as long as you satisfy your instructors syllabus and needs.
