i'm a 16 year old male and i've recently have been wanting to take a martial art. but what should i take? i want to take a martial art that teaches good self-defence techniques i've been leading toward kung fu, but i've head there's like 200 different styles so i don't know which one to take. also i live in tennessee and there's only one kung fu school near me and i Think it's mullins kung fu (i'm not sure though.) would this be a good kung fu for me to take?

take a look at what is in your area, distance is always a big factor in sticking to it. Do a bit of research on line and find out what style they teach, post it here so we can look as well, you never know what one of us will know that is not printed on line.

It sounds like you know your goals which is a big step.

Theres your first mistake, who would buy a ps3?

Now on topic, I am no expert but from what I hear shaolin/most versions of kung fu take alot of dedication and work to be really effective in self-defense. Thats what I hear anyways I am sure there are some people on this forum that would know better.

ok if it requires dedication that's not a problem b/c i plan on sticking to it also a friend of mine who used to go to the shaolin kung fu school i'm wanting to go to said they also teach other types of kung fu. but i guess shaolin kung fu is the main one and that they also hit him with a bamboo stick!! is that normal for them to do that? lol but this is something i wanna stick with is. shaolin kung fu any good? and if they also teach other types of kung fu what would you suggest i take? if they teach it of course

Shaolin Kung fu would be a great style to get into shape with, a good style for developing flexibility and Cardio health, but limited in fighting in a ring or on the street. it is very fancy and as such not very practicle. Remember what your goals are, how old are you and how long do you want to take to reach said goals. It is not a bad style unless it clashes with your goals. As a former "inductee" into the wrong way of thinking, dont let the MASTER tell you what you need or want unless it is related to the style itself. Dont get your head filled with foolish crap that he learned from the last guy that he trained with.

Oh, and the history part of the site is bull shit! Read it with out believing it and you will see what I mean...taught by the wolf man my ass, oh and if he was abandoned in the woods and picked up by the Shaolin munks....how do they know about his parrents. And the rest is almost as stinky! But if the style is solid go for it, and dont let a little thing like getting hit with a stick scare you off....in a street situation you get hit with alot worse.

if you are super committed to be a great fighter spiritually and mentally you should try wing chun they take a lot of commitment the schools interview you and screen you before you can enter you should try it its really good

Yes BJJ is great for Self Defense. They teach you how to survive when some heavy dude jumps on you and tries to strangle you (like in the movies).

Go for it!
