Conditioning the hands: y or n?

I posted this on the "off topic" board, but no answers. Hopefully you all can help.
Hey, new to the site but...
In a karate book i once read that conditioning of the striking implements of thehands can limit range of motion in the hands. is this true? should we condition the hands as in the olden okinawan days or discredit it altogether? (i personallly have always been in favor of conditioning--both skin and bone, but what do you think?)
eagerly awaiting replies, thank you.
