You all are wrong. Capoeira is a very great martial art. if i did it i would combine it with tae kwon do. since you do alot of kicks and spinning.

I don't believe in great martial arts, i believe in great fighters. and anytime you start a sentence with "you all are wrong" you're probably wrong. cause odds are everyone hasnt' agreed. and odds are if everyone else dosen't know the answer, neither do you, of course there is that rare exception

Nevertheless, winning a fight using real capoeira would make you an instant celebrity due to the fact that you did more backflips than most gymnastics practitioners do in a demonstration. it is not good for mma at all, not even complementary, because most of the dodging involves doing a cartwheel or falling onto your stomach.Very good workout however.for your lungs that is.

Begging to differ.... Jean silva showed that capoeira can be integrated...
He constantly used au (cartwheel) and meia lua de compasso (one hand on ground as a heel kick comes across) for a good show of silva, you can check: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OK_M-OxhjNA

For anyone who goes far enough into capoeira to realize that there is more than acrobatics, it can be very effective. The acrobatics are primarily for playing in the roda with other capoeira students, and for building the balance and coordination needed to perform moves without regard for you balance. This alone is one primary advantage of capoeira, it's very gratifying not to have to worry about all the balance upsetting tricks of other styles.
And... a cartwheel is different from an au, there are blocks and kicks in a good au, and it can be done in an area not bigger than 2 square feet

I have trained in Capoeira but unfortunately it wasn't the martial arts for me. It's a great martial arts that emphasis on rhythm and balance. you'd be suprised by a few capoeirista, they are quick and strong and they have unbelieveable good dodging skills.

that being said.
it's not the style of fighting that determines the how good the fighter is, it's the fighter himself.

Hi guys,
this is my first post on this forum. I was told about this tread. As most of know "things are not always as they might appear".

Capoeira's origens are from Africa, So many of it's philosophical applications differ greatly from those in the west or the east (Asia). Capoeira is not strieght foward. It was not design to compete fairly in a phisical contest. So it can't be Capoeira and still be in a sports match.

If any of you like I will answer any of your questions respecfully, as best as I can. I have been practising Capoeira for over 15 years. and have sparred full contact with it against most MA found in the U.S. of A.

this is a glass-over of modern Capoeira. Not the traditional art, but it shows it's muiti-faceted perspective. what confucess most outsider are these other aspects of the art form. It is not a fighting art only, by it's own. It's history from Africa and it's pursecution in Brazil has influence it's outward appearance.

a black belt cartwheelist huh? i bet sakuraba does better cartwheels than he does.

i've always thought the one hand on the ground heel kick is cheating technique accounting to needing help with balance, but i have seen it many times, i just dont like it. kind of like a spinning backfist, i dont like it, seems like a cheap shot in combat sports to me.

Yes, this guy doesnt knock or connect with any of his cartwheel capoeira moves. These cartwheels moves are more like a distraction. To me, he just looks like a fairly decent ground and pound guy.
The only good capoeira fighter I know is Blanka from Streetfighter - and it was mainly his electric shock what killed fighters :D

i think capoeira in combination with kickboxing or such could be great because you would have the practical striking power from kickboxing but you would also have the balance speed and like wacky striking ablity from capoeira like if you get like knocked down and all of the sudden you do a back flip and like 30 kicks i think they would like stay a lil bit away from you likie try and keep good distance

if someone was a master in capoeira and kickboxing and tae kwon do, he would still get ruled in MMA. sure he could win 1 or 2 fights, he could be good enough to win a couple more. but more often then not, a ground fighter is going to get ahold of him and the cartwheel fairy wont be there to help.

My brother does capoeira and it's not for self defense really..... I meen it was supposedly for self defense in brazil but it was "disguised" as a dance.
i went to one of his classes once and when they spar it's more about making it look smooth, and maybe dodging a kick here or there, how ever i have to say that it is one of the best martial arts that gets you in shape.

when you spar they all get in a circle and the two oppenents touch hands and cartwheel out to the center, after that they do a combo of flips and hand stands with some EXTREMELY flashy kicks all countering the other persons moves (sweeps, kicks etc..) but i got the impression that it was really just for fun not for ring fighting.... But one part i thought was WICKED cool was that you have too learn instruments when you move up ranks!

Yes, I think you are correct - Kapoeira is very similar to Kiai Jitsu, an Ancient Japanese Martial Art:

yeah but capoeria can actually defend you at times, they have some pretty sweet take down moves and riversals that they teach, but all teh flashy stuff is non sense.
