I've been in capoeira for about 7 months now and all I have to say is that it's awesome. First off, if you want an MA that will help you with self defense and/or street fighting, you best look elsewhere. Capoeira will help you with these, but there are more straight forward options available out there. However, capoeira is indeed effective when you gain enough experience. Don't think that it's just a flashy dance. Every move I have learned in class has an effective purpose in a fight. The ginga and the au are done for a combat reason and not to hide itself in a dance routine. You just have to understand the deceptive nature of the art. But like I said, it will take some time before you should consider using this art effectively anywhere outside the roda. Aside from that, capoeira is very fun and the girls look hot in capoeira pants.

do a backflip?

Perhaps, but there are so many more effective countors to a punch.

One can’t expect to understand Capoeira from seeing a class or two. The same for many of the different types of games found in Capoeira. Have any of you participated in a Capoeira fight class? Have any of you fought a Capoeira professor or above? Capoeira was designed to be deceptive, We never show all our tricks in public.

Capoeira was not designed for sport, especially one with so many rules, that eliminate half of our techniques and tactics. Some of you guys are confusing the flash with the fight. These are two very different aspects within Capoeira. If any of you have seen our games you will only see some of our fight elements. Have any of you seen any “hard games” (Jogo Duro) among advance practitioners?

MMA is a sport, with very specific rules and expected code of conduct. Capoeira can’t ever participate in such an event without compromising most of it’s philosophies.

P.S. Asia does not have any comprimal fighting art to Capoeira.

Capoeira...it may be a good defending MA, but not attacking.
It's a good fundamental MA to help you building balance and reflexes.
Even if you are practicing it seriously, it may help you not to lose in a fight, but you may not win.
Advantages: Balancing, reflexes, reflective counter attacks.
Weakness: Pivot arm/leg, predictable rhythm, speed, power.
I would not recommend Capoeira to be the main MA to practice, but it'll be much better to be a supplementary to one other MA like Muay Thai or TKD.

Well capoeira is affective IF you have a lot of space to fight
I think capoeira is a type of " show off " mixed martial arts with all those back flips and stuff like that
