My first BJJ Class

I had my first white belt basics class yesterday, and ended up with a broken toe and jacked up elbow due to an solid armbar someone got me in. However, it was awesome, and Im glad I started. I learned alot, even though its hard to break habits I learned in TKD. Anyone else out there that is apprehensive about it should get started right away. To all you guys doing it for a while, how long did you have to go when you started before you stopped getting your ass kicked every class like me

depends where i go to train lol, but when you have done 6 months or so and a newbie joins it will be the same for them

if you want to get to the top you have to do some climbing

Man I know how you feel. I remember starting my grappling class with just a wrestling background. Everytime they would take me down I would fall to my stomach. ACK!! Imagine giving someone that knows what they are doing your back with no contest. Not only that, but I remember that I used to cross my ankles when I got the rear mount...

i always do that to newbies, let them get my back and just watch them cross there ankles, and here comes the pain

where exactly are your ankles crossing? I dont do that so I want to make sure I dont. If you have someones back, dont you have both your hooks in anyways?

You should, but some people, especially new students, will cross their ankles instead. For example, say your opponent gives their back to you and you are in rear mount. Instead of getting your hooks in, which means have your feet on the inside of their thighs, you cross your ankles. All your opponent has to do is figure four his legs on your ankle and press down..

thats funny. my instructor ususally gives up his back when rolling with new students, jsut to show them first hand what no tto do. its ggod for a laugh to, esp when the kids thinks hes the shit cause hes got the instructors back.

Yup, I had my first class last week too. I got choked out twice, arm barred 4 times and scissor legged (crushing my sternum) once. Every once in a while I would roll with a guy who genuinely wanted to help me. Other than that, just guys wanting to use me as their dummy. :(

keep going back and they will put more time into you, its a old trick beat you up first few weeks and if you keep coming back you are worth training.
