In about 4 weeks I'm gonna start some Muay Thai classes and I need some help on getting some gloves but I hear things like "You need seperate gloves for sparring and just hitting the bag or you should only hit the bag with bag gloves"..I dont have money to buy multiple gloves so can I just get one set of gloves that I can spar in class and also hit the punching bag on my one, what kinds are the best and where can I get them (Dick Sporting Goods) etc. Thanks help is greatly appreciated.

doesnt really matter, I use 16 oz for sparring, pad work, bag work and just technique.

Thanks for the help, also I'm not sure if you have a Dick's Sporting Goods or Sports Authority where you live but could I get some gloves there, what kind do you recomend...also, have u heard of those glove wraps...they kind of look like ufc gloves but there gloves that replace the wraps to wear under the gloves, I was wondering if those are good or should I just get normal wraps. thanks

I prefer normal wraps, since you can adjust the wraps according to what you feel needs more protection (fingers or wrist). But if you have the money give the gloves a try - you'll be able to put those on in no time.

Ok, Where in the world can I get some decent gloves/ wraps, I would really prefer getting them at a store not online, I live in Worthingon, Ohio and if you know of any decent stores and maybe a few nice brands....also, I dont want to spend like no more then $50 on gloves.

But I wouldn't go out and fork out the cash for a pair of Fairtex or Windy gloves at the start, get some made by a smaller company, then once you get sucked in and sure you want to commit, then drop the $80 on a nice pair of gloves:D

Doesn't your club have any equipment? I would suggest using gloves that they have (they should atleast have gloves) then after a while buy some decent one's if it's still your thing and you're getting into training.

I guess it does but I was just thinking about asking for some gloves for my birthday present....and then I can just tell my parents the exact brand and what store to get it at...I guess I will just ask for money

it's your call but i think splashing out on gloves may be a bad move if you don't stick with it. I also agree with these guys - for your first pair just get a cheap set of boxing gloves like everlast or lonsdale which you should be able to pick up reletavely easy.

Then i'd suggest getting some thai ones off the net.

While its true that you shouldnt spend too much money until you are sure about the sport, it is important for you to be careful with your wrists!!
This is very relevant when it comes to hitting the heavy bag with hooks and such. Make sure that your instructor inspects your hand wrapping, and give you plenty of hints on how to avoid injury while striking effectively.

So - once you know you will be staying in the class for a while, you can go ahead and get those premium Fairtex or Windy gloves - which will also protect your wrist a little better.
