why martial arts are bad for your health!

Postby Kensei » Wed Jun 03, 2009 4:42 am

I thought a long time about what to write in the Kensei chronicles and was coming up dry, then recently I went to a buddies Judo club and goofed around with some of my old friends students. Young bucks that were told I had a black belt in four martial arts, so dont take it to easy on the squeeky old guy.

After a long ass warm up, more than we used to do, we did some break falls and then went into groups. I ended up facing a guy that was 6'1" and towered over me. he was big and beefy and hard to toss but I think he found it harder to take my 5'6" frame and toss it around as well....but trust me he found a way. I was then paired off against a gir...I say that losely, she was half a foot taller than me and probably as heavy. It was funny how her center of gravity was so much better than the guys, but her upper body strength was just not their.

after a half hour of falling, flipping and flopping all over the place and basically haveing been tossed or tossed half of the class around my buddy stopped everyone and said I was going to teach them some submissions. I balked at the idea at first...I have not done Judo or Sambo in years and most of my good stuff has been shown in the UFC since day one...or so! I scrambled to think of what a Judo class would not have seen every day in their Newaza style part of teh class. I picked a basic knee submission as I love leg subs and started teaching the class the move. I picked a rather bony kid that looked like his legs were match sticks. after a few shifts on the floor and squirming around I was in possition and grabbed hold of his leg, tucked the foot under my butt and secured the lock. He kind of looked at me like "that does not hurt" so I showed the class by tuggin on his leg a bit how to apply it....SNAP....Damn! The kids leg just kind of gave out! no big deal, he was fine, but my heart almost stopped. 20 people around me and I thought I tore the kids knee appart. Moving on to a basic arm bar from a take down....snap the kids shoulder does basically the same thing but this time with a great deal of pain...next partner!

The beefy guy wants to see an ankle sub...we all know my luck with ankle subs! Yah, SNAP! Guy hobbles off saying something like "yah, that would do the trick" and grimices every time he puts his weight on the foot....Next partner!

Okay, at this point I am at a loss and tired of hurting Craigs students. I said, okay folks lets do a exercies I like to call two minutes in hell! Every one that has done Sambo, real sambo, should know that two mintues in hell is basically two leg locks/ankle locks, two arm bars and a double choke at the same time, four people on one for a given amount of time. So Craigs head student says he wants to do the two minutes in hell. I set up the students and they lock in the grips and start. Well, one of the kids that is doing an arm bar is real excitable and...no, no snap...but his right leg being across this guys neck starts to push down hard and at the end of the two minutes, their I am trying to wake the guy up after being choked out.

Anyways the rest of the class went well, I kind of chatted about the difference between russian Sambo, sport Sambo and Judo and then we did hip toss' all night.

Wonder if I will be invited back?
Sounds like a recent sparring session with an instructor. Doing lite exchange on my part, ending in clinch, I let go to start anew when I caught a glimpse of a knee coming toward the balls (it didn't topple me, but to the pep out my step). Then tells me thats enough for today (it really hurted more five minutes later).

Off question: why is there sometimes a delayed pain registry when hit in the balls?
lol good question.......

When I was younger...much younger I brought a buddy with me to go pick up my sister at a video store that she worked at, it was one of the first VHS tape stores that you could rent movies from...yes, that long ago! Anyways, he tought it would be funny to "sack" me and run, but he forgot the run part! so, their I am in my leather jacket, jeans and tee shirt waiting for my sister to close up while my goofy buddy sacked me in the isle of the store. I am 5'5" and was probably 145 back then....Ions ago it seem....he was 6'1" and probably 180! I grabbed him by the inner thigh and the shoulder and did my best hulk hogan impression by picking him up and throwing him...probably 3 feet away but it seemed much more impressive at the time!

I did not feel much more than rage at the time, but after I calmed down and had a chance to focus on the "injury" my guts tightened up and I felt sick to my stomach! I am not sure if it is adrenaline or just being so focused on something else, like Slamming the guy who hit you to the floor, but I did not feel it at first as well! or maybe it was the tight jeans...Dont know!

Hell, my wife and I are wacked out! One time we were wrestling and she grabbed the bloody upright vacume and crowned me with it. she does not go for the Jewels, she grew up on a farm and a bit of a tom boy so she basically nails you with an Elbow if she can, cross the forehead!

My neice thought it funny to kick you in the shin and yes, one time she kicked the bells! Actually it is so common in Karate we call it Kin-Geri or "golden bell kick"!
