In my kickboxing school I was approved to spar when I went into level 2 in 10 months. The instructor held an audition for those who would qualify. It was a full contact session going up against students of different skill level, height, and weight. I had to go up against a few instructors too. This was the first time I ever really faught. I was done, say the least! It was more of an execution than a test to see whether I had it in me to go up against others. So if I were you, I wouldn't start sparring until you are completely ready both mentally and physically.
